Top video. For exterior work we always use the Zinzeer system nowadays. 1-2-3 prime then finish with two coats of the waterbased allcoat. A fantastic product.
Zinsser as well as or instead of sanding?
don't you have to rinse it off after
I never do and it works fine Jack.
I'm a young woman learning how to do DIY tasks like this for the first time. Thank you for such a helpful video!
That is great news that you are having a go at doing some DIY tasks. I hope all goes well with your projects. I have many other videos on the channel that may also be useful to you 😊
Aubrey, once again a great instructional video. I think you may have just explained what went wrong for me on a bare plaster surface. I watered down a vinyl Matt!. You are easy to understand and my go to RUclips paint man. Thankyou
So glad you are finding the videos helpful. Thank you for the very kind comment Graeme 😊
Best explanation on misting I've seen on line .Top job .
That is great news, thank you for the very positive comment 😁
Good afternoon Aubrey. Sorry to bother you but why do some decorators not recommend using contract matt. I will however, be following your advice. I was just wondering. Thanks.
Contract matt has a history of being chosen to be applied to new plaster as its permeable qualities allows any moisture in the plaster to dry out naturally through the paint film. It does, however, not contain any resin such as vinyl, acrylic, or latex. This means it cannot be washed down and is easily marked. Most new houses are painted with contract matt and if you rub the walls with a damp cloth the paint will come off onto the cloth. Many decorators prefer to use thinned down vinyl matt emulsion for a mist coat and one or two further coats because of its durability and it does provide good adhesion for future coatings. If vinyl matt is to be used then the plaster must be fully dried out.
Aubrey. Thank you so much for the information. I now know the difference thanks to you. I really do appreciate your help and knowledge.
I'm in the middle of taking off woodchip. I think removing the paste off is going to be a bugger of a chore. I plan to wash down with sugar soap and scrape off the goo. I'm afraid I'll be missing bits though.
Yes, it can be a very messy job but it is essential to remove the old paste. To be safe, if you intend to emulsion the walls afterwards then first apply a coat of Zinsser Guards to seal the surface. Hope all goes well for you.
Very helpful video Aubrey and great to see you back.
Glad you like the video Deborah, more are in the pipeline 😊
Hi Aubrey interesting video I always thought my walls in the house were terrible to paint because the paint would roll on and off the roller and blisters would appear as well the walls were bare. I watched your video on how to wallpaper a few years ago and you give me the confidence to give it a go. Very happy to say it worked out so well that I wallpapered the whole house and bought the paste ready made to keep me right. I found the work to be physical but the end result was worth it. Many thanks for the excellent videos.
That is great news Daisy, so glad the videos gave you the confidence to get stuck in. The sense of achievement must have been fantastic. 😊
Nice to see you back
Thank you 😊
@@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating I'm actually got my new loft conversion ready to mist coat in a few weeks, once I've done the skirting, so the top tips are very timely 👌
Good stuff 😊
Hi Can vinyl silk be applied over mist coat
It may be a good idea to apply a further coat of matt emulsion which has not been thinned down before applying the vinyl silk. This will help to provide an even sheen finish over the whole surface without patches of uneven shine.
Thanks very much Aubrey. this video is just what I needed.
That is great news, hope all goes well for you 😊
A lot of decorators will tell you not to use contract mat.
@hardworker8030 what do they use please?
@@chrissterling9924 I’ve come across customers who have used thinned down PVA. Ok if you’re going to wallpaper over it but there is a chance if you painted it then the surface will ‘crazy pave’. Thinned down Contract Matt the cheapest and best solution in my opinion!
@@chrissterling9924 I'm not a decorator but some will say use optiva primer. The vinyl he showed can be used as a mist coat according to the tin. With contract matt it will absorb any moisture and some painters are reporting different brands of paint does not bond to contract matt. If you look when he's painting it on its not absorbing into the plaster so is this the correct paint for dry plaster.
Great content Aubrey! Is the same preparation for mist coating, the same for previously wallpapered walls? Just wondering about the wallpaper paste in or on the surface of the plaster and whether it will re-emerge once wetted by the mist coat. Keep them coming mate
Thank you for your kind comments. I can understand why you may have concerns regarding this. It is essential that you fully wash down the surface after removing the wallpaper before applying any paint. I would suggest applying a thinned down emulsion over a test area first to ensure that there ae no problems with the applied paint like cracking, slow drying or flaking. If all goes well then apply a thinned own coat of the matt emulsion followed by two further coats. otherwise, try applying a coat of Zinsser Guards which is a great product for sealing areas which have wallpaper paste residue on them. Hope all goes well for you.
If you've got bits of exposed plaster on a painted wall due to sanding shall i just mist coat the exposed bits before applying final coat
Yes, first apply a thinned down coat of matt emulsion over the bare areas first.
Great content Aubrey! I came across a customer who had put unthinned vinyl silk on his newly skimmed kitchen and wondered why it was peeling off. Well as you can guess it all had to gone off before it could be done properly! Luckily it came off in sheets. His face was a picture 😂. Welcome back old bean 👌🏻
Thank you for the kind comment Derek. I have also come across this sort of problem several times. There is a lot more to painting and decorating than many people realise. However, it has been said to me many times that these sort of DIY problems keep decorators busy sorting them out.
Have been following your channel for a while. Really enjoy your approach and advice, and you inspire us to get stuck in !
That is great news, glad you are enjoying the channel. More videos in the pipeline 😊
I find you'll always need more paint than you think.
Nice one Aubrey 👍
Thank you! 😃
May I ask a question. I want to paint a ceiling with matt emulsion that was previously painted with vinyl matt emulsion. Should I give it a coat of Zinsser 123, or is it safe to paint straight over the existing emulsion?
It will be safe to apply the matt emulsion over the existing matt emulsion.
@@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating Thanks. Even though the existing emulsion is vinyl?
Yes, that will be fine.
Hi Aubrey. Thanks for the replies. I've just found out that the previous owner always used Dulux Vinyl Silk (not matt), so it seems I'll have to Zinsser the ceiling/coving first. I have a few tins of Dulux Eggshell (water-based) left from a previous room. Is eggshell OK for ceilings and coving (after the Zinsser)? Thanks
Water based eggshell is often used for painting woodwork, kitchen units and walls where a tough and durable finish is required. You could use it on the surfaces you mention, however it is not normally applied to ceilings.
Really enjoy the videos! Mask the windows when rolling thinned paint as it spatters everything, including you 😂
That's the fun part 😂
Good practical advice as usual Aubrey
Glad you think so! 😊
Good video lots of info.
Thank you, glad you found it helpful James 😊

That is great news William, thank you 😊
You are a very good teacher with simple clear explanations and instructions.
Thank you very much!
Its good but it's too long winded, it's alot of work just for one socket...
Can you paint water based paint over that primer? Or does it have to be oil based. Thanks
You can paint water based over the primer.
Wealth of knowledge here. subbed, thx
Thank you, glad you are finding the videos helpful. More coming soon 😊
How many coats would you do for a door?
If the door is in good condition and to remain white: Oil based paint - 2 coats of satinwood or one undercoat and one gloss. Water based paint over oil base paint - two coats of Zinsser Bullseye 123 followed by one coat of water based satin or water based gloss. I hope that helps.

@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating wow...that's awesome 👌
Do you mind demonstrating how to hang wallpaper on an outside bullnose corner? Thanks!!,
Yes, I will do this if I get the opportunity.
Would you use 2 separate pieces of wallpaper like a regular outside corner or use 1 sheet and wrap around the bullnose edge? I have seen both method demonstrated, but don’t know which will have the best results. Please advise!
Just watched your video I’ve painted water based paint on top of of oil based gloss paint is a bit patchy any ideas how to rectify
Thank You! You are an artist / painter.. What an awesome skill. Thanks for sharing…
Thank you very much!
Hello Aubrey just a question I’ve been doing some wallpapering it’s a paintable vinyl. It’s paste the paper. When I book it, the instructions tell me to leave it for 5 minutes. The instructions also say use mixed purpose paste. After leaving it to soak and then opening the paper up it’s ripping the backing paper off. I’ve changed the paste three times and I get the same result. Any ideas what it could be?
It sounds like eiher the paste is very strong and may be causing the tearing or it could also be too watery which can cause delamination of the paper. For thik paste you could try flapping the paper over after pasting but only place it lightly on the surface and don't press it down while it is soaking for the five minutes. Alternatively, as it only requires five minutes, then just leave it unfolded for the five minutes. If the paste is to watery then discard and try an alternative paste. I do hope you find a way around this problem.
@@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating yeah I did three pastes later 😂. I left it open but the paper was drying out too quick so I started just booking it lightly so it was just touching. I must have been pressing down too hard on the paper which was causing it to stick and rip. I’ve had a nightmare job I don’t do much papering but it’s starting to get popular again. Thanks mate
Show the sheen on screen. None of the YT videos show the actual sheen in their videos.
Thanks, I've been having an issue with a skin forming on the paint in the can although the lid is banged on tight and also with water based paint, rust forming on the rim of the can found after some storage, so have to be careful the rust doesn't fall into the paint, I try and go for the plastic lids, but they're not always available. Have you any ideas on the prevention of these issues.
Yes these things can be very annoying. To prevent skin forming on oil based paints, try pouring a small amount of white spirit onto the paint and swirl around so it covers the surface of the paint before putting the lid back on the tin. The problem with the rust on the metal tins is not so easy to deal with. I would suggest de-canting the paint into a plastic paint kettle with a lid and labeling the contents with a permanent marker. You can get packs of these kettles with lids on the internet.

Would this method be good for cleaning wood patio decking?
It would certainly treat any mould that requires removing.
Nip down and find the consumer unit.
My door is very close to the exterior corner, should I make sure the 'second cut piece' overlaps the door frame??
Good idea.
Great tip.
